Katappa did not kill Baahubali - trailer has leaked evidence

The wait has ended.

The trailer of Baahubali 2 -The Conclusion released this morning, reassuring that fans of the first installment of the movie will get closure to the most pertinent question - "Why did Katappa kill Baahubali?"

Giving an idea of how easily SS Rajamouli's magnum opus will shatter all box-office records, the Telugu trailer of the movie has, within 12 hours, garnered over nine million views and the Hindi trailer has been viewed more than three million times.

Such was, is the hype. But does the new trailer live up to the expectations? NO!

The trailer, as expected, is high on action but action is not what drew me to the movie. It was the drama. And that is missing in the new trailer. The grandeur we saw in Baahubali-The Beginning has been maintained, but I feel it wasn’t exploited enough.

Maybe the director chose not to reveal much, but then, I believe the sole purpose of a trailer is to impress the viewer and pull them to the cinema hall.

The trailer of Baahubali-The Beginning made me feel there was an epic story waiting to be told and despite having just a couple of dialogues, made me feel there was a lot, A LOT, to look forward to.

There was an interesting, emotional story worth knowing in the movie but the climax, along with the obvious question, left many others unanswered as well. I expected at least some of these to be, if not answered, at the very least, be addressed in the new trailer.

Instead of hinting at the possibility that Amarendra Baahubali trusted Katappa effortlessly and that Katappa wouldn’t have knowingly killed his king, the trailer doesn’t give me anything.

Disappointed, I saw the trailer over and over to notice every minute detail and there was this one frame that told me Katappa could not have killed Baahubali.

This!

Let me explain.

[Spoilers ahead]

In Baahubali-The Beginning, it was Katappa who told Mahendra Baahubali, the king’s son, his foster parents and all the people gathered, that it was him who killed their king. The scene follows, showing Katappa stabbing Baahubali in the back, and then the end credits roll. Watch it here to refresh your memory:

Coming back to the new trailer with the sequence that shows Katappa kneeling down in front of Baahubali and the king piercing his sword into the ground. After noticing this sequence, I cannot help but come to two deductions:

1) Amarendra Baahubali asked Katappa to kill him and the latter obviously did not.

2) Katappa lied about killing the king.

The climax of the first installment where Katappa was shown stabbing Baahubali and the above mentioned sequence are both set at the same spot. Fire in the background and the protagonists on a slope. Which essentially means, Baahubali and Katappa had a heart-to-heart conversation there.

Baahubali, tired of fighting his brother Bhallaladeva, asked Katappa to go back and lie to his people that their king has been killed. Katappa obliged, returned to the kingdom, and made up a story that an attack was launched at him and the king out of nowhere and that the king couldn’t be saved.

The other reason to believe that Katappa didn’t kill Baahubali is a dialogue in Baahubali-The Beginning. Bhallaladeva tells Devasena “both of us hope Baahubali comes back. You could meet him one last time and he could die AGAIN AT MY HANDS”. So who killed Baahubali? If Bhallaladeva killed him, then who did Katappa kill?

Katappa did not kill Baahubali!

Director of the franchise Rajamouli would have been laughing at all those who fell for this lie, just like the people of Mahishmati kingdom.

There is a good chance that Baahubali will return in the conclusion and kill Bhallaladeva himself, because a young, powerful Mahendra Baahubali killing a now old Bhallaladeva cannot be a sign of valour, right? Only equals fight.
