Unless you’ve been living under a rock, Rihanna and ASAP Rocky announced on January 31 that they are expecting their first child together. The announcement was done in style, with a photoshoot in New York City.
The Diamonds singer was seen sporting a pair of low-rise baggy jeans and a long pink Chanel jacket. She strategically kept her oversized outerwear unbuttoned just above her baby bump. The singer also wore long necklaces with colourful jewels that covered her bump. *cue the awws*
The couple only recently confirmed their relationship, at the Met Gala in September 2021. Back in 2020, Rihanna told British Vogue that she planned on having 3 to 4 kids, whether or not she found the right person.
To say the world is shook would be an understatement. But RiRi isn’t the only celebrity who broke the internet with her pregnancy announcement. Over the past decade, pregnancy announcements have been getting more creative and *dramatic* by the minute.
Here are 6 that pretty much no one saw coming:
1. KATY PERRY AND ORLANDO BLOOM
On March 5, 2020, the Queen of Camp announced her pregnancy with fiancé Orlando Bloom in the music video for her song Never Worn White. Their daughter was named Daisy Dove Bloom and at the time of her birth, the couple set up a donation page to celebrate her arrival.
The music video featured Katy in a huge floral dress and a floral headdress. In the last clip, Katy is seen wearing a sheer white dress and cradling her baby bump. The video gained over 36 million views on YouTube.
2. CARDI B AND OFFSET
Cardi B has welcomed two children with husband Offset. Her pregnancy announcements for both these children were one of a kind. For her firstborn, Kulture, Cardi wore a white skin-tight Christian Siriano gown and performed on Saturday Night Live. She had been denying pregnancy rumours for weeks till the performance. The performance aired on April 8, 2018.
For her second child, whose name has not been revealed yet, Cardi performed with Migos at the BET Awards in June 2021 and revealed her (second) pregnancy. She wore a Dolce and Gabbana, form-fitting bodysuit that had a sheer panel, revealing her baby bump.
3. MEGHAN MARKLE AND PRINCE HARRY
After Meghan Markle’s revelation of a miscarriage, she and Prince Harry announced their second pregnancy with their daughter Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor with a series of black and white photographs. The photos were taken by Misan Harriman and featured the couple at their home in California. On February 15, 2021, Harry and Meghan announced that they were expecting their second child. Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor was born on June 4. 2021.
Lilibet is the first royal to be born as an American citizen and like her brother, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, does not have an HRH title.
4. SOPHIE TURNER AND JOE JONAS
Sophie Turner, known for keeping prying eyes away from her, did not make a pregnancy announcement. Instead, multiple sources confirmed the news of her pregnancy to JustJared, who broke the news first on Februray 12, 2020. The world was taken by surprise when she and Joe Jonas were also seen around Los Angeles flaunting her baby bump.
After the birth of their daughter, Wila, Sophie shared multiple unseen pictures from her pregnancy on her Instagram and a tattoo with of the letter ‘W’.
5. JENNIFER LAWERENCE AND COOKE MARONEY
Taking a cue from Sophie Turner, J-Law also did not announce her pregnancy. She was photographed with husband, Cooke Maroney in New York City, walking around with her baby bump on September 9, 2021. After the couple broke the internet, her representatives confirmed the news.
Jennifer was also seen with Amy Schumer in one of the many Women’s Marches against abortion laws being held across the US on October 2, 2021.
Amy shared a picture with Jennifer on Instagram that also had her baby bump. Since then, Jennifer has made multiple appearances with her bump to promote her film, Don’t Look Up.
6. BEYONCE AND JAY-Z
Beyoncé could easily be credited to be the first celebrity to announce her pregnancies in the most dramatic fashion. At the time of her 2011 VMAs performance, she was pregnant with her daughter Blue Ivy Carter. She began the performance with her song Love On Top and told the audience that ‘love’ was growing inside her. Interestingly, the audience did not understand the reference.
But by the end of her performance, Beyoncé unbuttoned her jacket and rubbed her hand over her stomach. The crowd then understood that she was pregnant and erupted in excitement.
This wasn’t the only time Beyoncé caused chaos. To announce her pregnancy with her twins, Sir and Rumi Carter, she posted a picture of herself on Instagram on Februray 2, 2017. She was seem wearing a veil and holding her baby bump.
The photo was captioned, “We would like to share our love and happiness,” she began in the captioned photo. “We have been blessed two times over. We are incredibly grateful that our family will be growing by two, and we thank you for your well wishes”. The Instagram post gained over 11 million likes.
Which one of these announcements made you jump out of your chair?
