This week, the NASA inched closer to finding another earth. As part of its Kepler mission - a quest to find planets similar to the earth - scientists from the space research organisation found a "near-earth sized" planet that they termed the blue planet's older cousin, orbiting a star similar to the Sun.

Some fast facts about earth's twin:

  • With the sighting of Kepler 452b, NASA says the "earth is less lonely"
  • Kepler 452b gets 20 percent more energy from its host star than the Earth does from the Sun - this means earth's twin is 20 percent brighter
  • Kepler 452b is 60 per cent larger than earth
  • Kepler 452b orbits a host star - its main source of energy - 1.5 billion years older than our Sun
