The wave of tech layoffs doesn't seem to be ending soon, with Microsoft now joining the likes of Silicon Valley giants Meta and Amazon. Microsoft is firing at least 5% of its workforce starting today, according to Sky News and various other media reports.
The US-based company already fired at least 1,000 of its employees in 2022 across all divisions; and now, is looking to lay off members from the HR division and engineers.
However, a Microsoft spokesperson told AFP that the company would not comment on what it referred to as "rumour."
As of June 30, 2022, Microsoft had 2,21,000 full-time employees, with 99,000 employees outside the US. Microsoft has 18,000 employees in India.
However, Microsoft has yet to issue an official statement.
Tech Winter: For thousands of tech workers, the start of the New Year has been pretty dismal due to layoffs across tech industries in the world. More than 30,000 individuals have lost their employment globally in less than a week in 2023. The wave of layoffs began with Twitter in 2022, after Elon Musk took over the reins of the company. Soon, Mark Zuckerberg-led Meta followed suit. Amazon too laid off thousands soon after.

By the way: The 30,000 people sacked in half of January 2023 alone is almost twice as many workers as were fired for the whole month of December 2022.
According to statistics from Layoffs.fyi, a tracking site that has been tracking job layoffs since Covid-19, 30 organisations are responsible for sacking off jobs of 30,611 employees.
