Google is set to revolutionize its core search engine by incorporating generative artificial intelligence (AI), following in the footsteps of Microsoft's integration of GPT-4 into Bing.
The AI, known as 'Search Generative Experience', will introduce the ability to craft responses to open-ended queries. The AI is in 'experimental phase' and will be available to a limited number of users soon.
During its annual developer conference in Mountain View, California, on Wednesday (May 10), Google showcased its latest advancements in artificial intelligence, including the 'Search Genrative Experience' and unveiled new hardware offerings.
According to Reuters, Google is integrating generative AI into search as well as products such as Gmail, which can create draft messages, and Google Photos, which can make changes to images like centering figures and coloring in empty space.
U.S. consumers will gain access to the Search Generative Experience in the coming weeks via a wait list, a trial phase during which Google will monitor the quality, speed and cost of search results, Vice President Cathy Edwards said in an interview, according to BBC.
Google's push to enhance its AI capabilities is driven by the tremendous success of rival chatbot ChatGPT, backed by Microsoft.
Google's ambitions in the field of AI have not been without setbacks. In a previous attempt to showcase its AI capabilities, Google faced a significant embarrassment in February.
The rise of ChatGPT as a formidable AI chatbot has positioned it as a rival to Google, especially with Microsoft's plans to incorporate AI in applications like Excel and Word after bing. Google's ongoing experimentation with its chatbot and advancements in AI have piqued curiosity about what they will unveil next. This competition between industry giants is driving innovation in natural language processing and conversational AI, with the potential to revolutionize digital experiences.
