Why is the Ahmedabad crowd facing backlash after the World Cup final?

India's 1.43 billion population currently feels disheartened after Team India's loss to Australia, securing the World Cup trophy for the sixth time. However, on X (Twitter), the Ahmedabad crowd is facing significant criticism, labelled as 'rubbish' for their behaviour during the match.

What happened

The World Cup occurred at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the world's largest stadium. Following the match, many took to X to express that the crowd at the Narendra Modi stadium was 'disgraceful'.

Comparisons were drawn between the Ahmedabad spectators and those at different stadiums across India, like Eden Garden and Wankhede, highlighting how the latter might have displayed the true spirit of the game.

Numerous users mentioned the overall silence of the spectators at the stadium after the game leaned in favour of the Australian side. Some also highlighted instances during the match when commentators pointed out the response of the Ahmedabad crowd to good shots played by Australian players.

A tweet by Atul Kasbekar, an Indian fashion photographer, sparked considerable outrage. He wrote, "Last word: The Ahmedabad crowd was rubbish. Need proper fans inside a stadium instead of fly-by-night pretenders. Like the amazing people at Wankhede, proper fans."

Some also pointed out that the spectators were 'graceless' as they left the stadium before the presentation.

Before the final match, Australia captain Pat Cummins expressed readiness to embrace the challenge. "I think you've got to embrace it," he said during a press conference on Saturday.
