A group of militants stormed Bacha Khan University in Charsadda, near Peshawar, in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Gunmen entered the university and opened fire on students and teachers in classrooms and hostels.
Four of the gunmen who stormed the campus have been killed, police said, but other attackers are believed to be on the second and third floors of campus buildings and firing is still going on.
Professor Syed Hamid Husain, a PhD in organic chemistry has been killed in the ongoing attack on Bacha Khan University. According to a rescue worker, 60 to 70 students had been shot in the head by the attackers.
Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the attack.
