The widely used social media platform, formerly known as Twitter and now referred to as X, was inaccessible to its users for an hour today (December 21) morning, starting around 11 am, causing frustration and confusion among its user base.
What
The platform was non-functional for about an hour in the morning, ranging from 11 am to approximately 12.15 pm, with the popular 'explore window' displaying a blank screen due to a suspected technical glitch on Thursday.
Both the website and mobile app showed an unusual 'Welcome to your timeline' message instead of the usual tweet feed, rendering the platform unusable for users.
Downdetector has received over 70,000 reports of the platform's unavailability, though the cause of this issue remains unknown at present.
Not the first time
This outage is not an isolated incident for X.
Previously, in July 2023, Downdetector recorded over 13,000 instances of outages in the US and the UK, often displaying a "Sorry, you are rate limited. Please wait a few moments then try again" message.
On March 6, the platform faced a few hours of downtime, affecting users' access to links, images, and videos.
During that outage, owner Elon Musk attributed the disruption to maintenance-related coding changes.
"The code stack is extremely brittle for no good reason. Will ultimately need a complete rewrite,"
