A video depicting a large group of people scouring a busy Surat road for diamonds has gone viral on X (formerly Twitter), and the actual reason behind it is quite ironic.

What happened?

X is inundated with videos of people combing the streets of Surat in search of diamonds. This incident transpired following a rumor that circulated about a Surat-based diamond merchant who had accidentally dropped diamonds worth millions on the streets of Varachha, a renowned diamond trading hub within Surat.

This set off a widespread frenzy, prompting numerous individuals to begin scraping the streets in search of these elusive diamonds.

Plot twist

To the chagrin of the long line of eager and committed diamond seekers, it was later revealed that the gemstones discovered on the streets were, in fact, American diamonds, which are far from being worth "millions."

People who believed the rumors:

These glass-cut diamonds are commonly used in:

  • Imitation jewelry
  • Saree decorations

These diamonds are way cheaper than regular diamonds and come in a price range between Rs 190 to Rs 350.

Furthermore, the theory that ignited it all - frustrated diamond traders discarding their diamonds on the pavement due to financial woes - turned out to be untrue.

Somebody dropped a bag of American diamonds on the street, following which the rumours started circulating. After this, people began looking for the diamonds on the street.
