Delhi just got its very first transgender member of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in AAP leader Bobi Kinnar. Kinnar defeated Congress candidate Varuna Dhaka by over 6,700 votes to win the Sultanpuri-A ward. The 38-year-old is the first transgender candidate to contest and also win in the MCD elections

So, who is Bobi Kinnar? Born and raised in the Sultanpur area, Bobi Kinnar had a rough childhood and life. But that didn't stop her from achieving her dreams.

  • As a child, Bobi was bullied and harassed for her sexuality in school and neighbourhood.
  • She was abandoned by her family at the age of 14-15 and given away to a transgender community guru. Although, now she is said to be in touch with her mother.
I faced insults all my life, but it never stopped me from dreaming that transgender people like me will get value and respect in society one day.

  • As part of the transgender community, Kinnar started to dance and sing at weddings.
  • Then at the age of 21-22, she joined an NGO where she learnt to read and write.
  • She eventually started working as a social activist helping women trapped in bad marriages, underprivileged children and transpersons.

Political journey: Bobi Kinnar, also known as Bobi Darling, began her political journey roughly around the time of the Anna Hazare movement in 2011; the same movement that catapulted Arvind Kejriwal to fame.

  • She met Arvind Kejriwal at the movement and has known him since then.
  • But it isn't the first time Kinnar has contested elections. She first contested unsuccessfully as an independent candidate in 2017.
  • This time, AAP decided to field Bobi Kinnar after extensive research on whether she would make for a good and strong leader, CNBCTV 18 quoted Ramesh Kumar, an AAP party worker, as saying.
  • Other than being a member of MCD, Bobi Kinnar also holds the post of the President of the Hindu Yuva Samaj Ekta Awam Anti-Terrorism Committee, Delhi unit.

Bobi Kinnar's way forward: She wants to focus on cleanliness in Sultanpuri-A ward, which is known for its open drains and potholes.
