Neeraj Chopra has etched his name in history and brought immense pride to the nation on Sunday (August 27) by clinching the coveted gold medal at the World Athletics Championship held in Budapest.
The 25-year-old Olympic gold-medalist achieved the feat in his second attempt, marking a throw of 88.17 meters, the highest in the high-quality men’s javelin field.
Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan secured the second position with a throw of 87.82 meters, while Jakub Vadlejch from Czechoslovakia claimed the third spot with a throw of 86.67 meters.
Across India, fans were glued to their television screens with bated breath as Chopra's first attempt did not yield the desired outcome. However, he astounded everyone in his second attempt with a remarkable throw of 88.17 meters, solidifying his victory in the tournament.
With this triumph, Neeraj Chopra has now completed an impressive collection of global achievements, including the Olympic Gold Medal, the Diamond Trophy, and the Gold medal at the World Championships.
This achievement also marks India’s third medal at the World Athletic Championships. Anju Bobby George secured a bronze medal in women’s long jump, and Neeraj himself earned a silver medal at the World Championships last year in Eugene.
The spotlight continued to shine on Indian athletes as DP Manu and Kishore Jena also secured spots in the top 10. Kishore Jena claimed the fifth position with her career-best throw of 84.77 meters. DP Manu secured the sixth spot with a throw of 84.14 meters.
This event also marks a historic occasion, with three Indian athletes reaching the final of the men’s javelin competition in the World Athletics Championships for the very first time. Among them, two young talents delivered their finest performances, further highlighting the remarkable victory of Neeraj Chopra as he clinches the Gold medal.
