Can you take an Uber or Ola from Gurgaon to Noida? What Delhi govt order says

Delhi is facing a serious pollution problem, with the air quality getting worse than ever. So much so, that it is now categorized as 'severe' for a few consecutive days. To tackle this, the Delhi Government has decided to stop app-based taxis like Uber and Ola registered in other states from entering Delhi.

This decision was made after the Supreme Court raised concerns about pollution and pulled up Delhi to ensure the pollution subsided.

Clarity on whether even CNG taxis will be included in the ban will come after tomorrow’s Supreme Court’s Friday hearing
- Gopal Rai, Delhi Environment Minister

But what does this mean for commuters who rely on services like Uber and Ola to travel between places like Gurgaon and Noida?

What

  • The Delhi Government is taking steps to reduce pollution by banning non-Delhi registered commercial cabs from Ola, Uber, and similar apps from entering the city.
  • Only cabs registered in Delhi will be allowed to operate in Delhi.
  • If you're in Gurgaon or Noida, your cab might have an HR or UP registration, but due to the ban, these won't be allowed into Delhi.
  • This means if you're travelling between Gurgaon and Noida, your cab will still pass through Delhi, but it must be registered in Delhi to continue operating in the city.

So if your destination is in Noida and you are travelling from Gurgaon, this order will directly impact your travel. (same vice versa)

Gopal Rai, the Delhi Environment Minister, on Wednesday, November 10, stated that only taxis registered in Delhi will be permitted to operate in the city. He mentioned that a detailed order will be issued to explain how this decision will be carried out.

Uber, one of the major cab aggregators, said that it's already following pollution protocols by using CNG or electric cars in Delhi.

While we haven’t received any order from the Transport Department, we want to reiterate that all the cars on the Uber platform in Delhi are CNG or electric and shared mobility helps more people commute in fewer cars.

The ban might cause inconvenience for some, but it's expected to make Delhi's air much better. The government is making public transportation, like the metro, better to make travelling easier for everyone.

Due to the very bad air quality, schools in Delhi are closing early for winter break, from today until November 18.

The Supreme Court mentioned the odd-even car rule, which will be in place from November 13 to November 20, but it's not final yet.

Right now, Delhi's air quality is still very bad, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) over 400. The city is following Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to fight severe air pollution.

Because pollution is increasing, it's a good idea for people in Delhi to spend less time outside during the worst pollution times. Using air purifiers at home and in cars and wearing masks, especially for those with breathing issues, can also help.

This pollution issue is mainly caused by stubble burning.
