After being fired as OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman joins Microsoft

Sam Altman, a significant figure in OpenAI's development and generative AI, was unexpectedly removed from his position due to disagreements with the board.

In an unexpected turn of events, Sam Altman won't return as OpenAI's CEO but will partner with Microsoft to establish a new advanced AI research team, confirmed CEO Satya Nadella.
 

This decision came after efforts from the company's executives to bring him back failed.

Why he had to leave Open AI

• Altman is departing OpenAI because, after a thorough board review, they found inconsistencies in his openness and honesty in communications, impeding the board's effectiveness.
• Consequently, the board lost confidence in Altman's leadership at OpenAI.

"The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI," the company said, citing "a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities," the statement read.

• Emmett Shear, the former boss of Twitch, will step in as the new interim CEO, according to a statement from board director Ilya Sutskever, as reported by Reuters.
• Mira Murati, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), now serves as the temporary CEO of the AI company, following failed attempts by the company's executives to bring Altman back.

Sam Altman, a co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, was unexpectedly fired by the board on November 17.

Greg Brockman, another co-founder, resigned as president on the same day.

Altman's dismissal had a significant impact on the AI industry, and there were concerns about its effects on an upcoming $86 billion share sale as per BBC.

OpenAI began as a non-profit in 2015. In 2019, it underwent a restructuring and is now supported by Microsoft, which has invested a significant amount of money.

ChatGPT, a product of OpenAI, is well-known for its capability to generate human-like responses to user prompts, including text, images, and videos.
