A Pilatus trainer aircraft Mk II of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed, resulting in the death of two IAF pilots on Monday, December 3. The casualties include an experienced instructor and a dedicated cadet, both of whom succumbed to fatal injuries, reported ANI.
The accident took place during a routine training session at the Air Force Academy in Dundigal (north of Hyderabad), Telangana.
Visuals from the crash site show the aircraft ablaze in an empty stretch of land, with efforts underway to recover the bodies of the pilots.
IAF issues statement
- The IAF released an official statement, expressing deep regret over the accident: "One Pilatus PC 7 Mk II trainer aircraft met with an accident today morning during a routine training sortie from AFA, Hyderabad. It is with deep regret that (the) IAF confirms that both the pilots on board have sustained fatal injuries."
- Defence Minister Rajnath Singh shared his condolences, stating on X, "Anguished by this accident near Hyderabad. It is deeply saddening that two pilots have lost their lives. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the bereaved families."
Investigation
- A Court of Inquiry has been ordered to investigate and determine the cause of the accident.
- No civilian casualties or property damage has been reported.
Pilatus PC-7 aircraft
- The Pilatus PC-7 Turbo Trainer Mk II, a tandem-seat training aircraft with low wings, is part of the IAF training fleet.
- Manufactured in Switzerland by Pilatus Aircraft, the PC-7 is designed for basic training functions.
