There's no denying the importance of sunscreen, and it's common to have numerous questions surrounding its usage. Is it just a marketing ploy? How often should we reapply? Which SPF is the best? Fear not, as we present to you the ultimate guide that answers most of your burning queries.

Let's start with the basics:

What is SPF?

  • SPF stands for "Sun Protection Factor." Simply put, it measures the effectiveness of sunscreen or sunblock in shielding your skin from the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation of the sun. It serves as a guide to determine how long you can stay in the sun without getting sunburned when using a specific sunscreen.
  • The number you see on sunscreen bottles, such as SPF 50, represents the SPF rating, indicating the level of protection provided by the product. For instance, an SPF 50 sunscreen theoretically allows you to stay in the sun 50 times longer (500 minutes/8 hours) without experiencing sunburn.

The number that you see on your sunscreen bottle, for instance, there are several brands with SPF 50, that '50' is called the SPF number. It indicates the level of protection provided by a sunscreen product.

However, it's important to consider factors like individual skin type, sweat, water exposure, and correct application, as the effectiveness of sunscreen may vary. Also, remember to apply sunscreen at least 15-30 minutes before going outdoors.

How to choose the right sunscreen?

With the abundance of sunscreen options available, it can be overwhelming to make a choice. Here are five key factors to keep in mind:

Sun Protection Factor (SPF): Look for a sunscreen with a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher, which provides protection against UVA and UVB rays. Check the label to ensure it's a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Skin Type: Consider your specific skin type and any particular needs you may have. For sensitive skin, choose a sunscreen labeled as hypoallergenic or designed for sensitive skin. If you have oily skin, opt for a lightweight, oil-free formulation.

Water-Resistant: If you are planning to go in the water or will be doing some sports that will lead to a lot of sweating, select a water-resistant sunscreen (don't forget to frequently re-apply).

Ingredients: Check the sunscreen's ingredient list. Opt for mineral sunscreens containing active ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, as they are considered safer alternatives to chemical sunscreens.

Remember that sunscreens come in various forms, such as lotions, creams, gels, sprays, and sticks. Choose a formulation that you find convenient and comfortable to apply.

If you have specific skin conditions, consulting with a dermatologist can provide personalized recommendations.

How to properly apply and reapply sunscreen?

When it comes to sunscreen application, remember the mantra of "less is more." Celebrities like Alia Bhatt, Kriti Sanon, and Kim Kardashian stress the importance of sunscreen but applying it generously. Let's clear up any confusion regarding the quantity:

But let us clear your doubts. How much exactly?

Of course, you need to apply sunscreen in a generous amount, but you don't have to become Cameron from Modern Family and go all out with it (if you don't know what I am talking about see the GIF).

Jokes aside, here's the best way- Follow the two-fingers rule: Take your two fingers and apply a line of sunscreen on them. That amount is enough for your face and neck.

For your body, apply approximately two tablespoons.

When to re-apply? Experts say that you should reapply sunscreen every two-three hours, or more frequently if sweating, swimming, or towel-drying, to maintain effective sun protection throughout the day.

Should men also apply sunscreen?

It's 2023, and sadly, we still feel the need to address this question, Many men, especially in India, do not understand the importance of sunscreen. Yes, do you need sunscreen for your skin. No, it's not just women who need it.

If you think applying sunscreen is a hassle, get a sunscreen spray, that you can just quickly spray like a mist.

Should you apply sunscreen to your body?

Yes, it is important to apply sunscreen to your body as well as your face. Sunscreen should be applied to all exposed areas of the body that are not covered by clothing.

Should you apply sunscreen only in summer?

  • Despite what you think, sunscreen should be applied throughout the year, not just in the summers. Rays from the sun can still reach your skin even on cloudy or cold days.
  • Therefore, it should be used as part of your daily skincare routine, regardless of the season or weather conditions. You can however re-apply more often, during the summer seasons.

Should you apply sunscreen while you are indoors?

Even if you are indoors you should apply sunscreen. Before you think, it's too much, we know it is, but here's why: If you have any ventilation or glass in your room, the UVA rays can still penetrate. Now add your blue light (HEV Light) from your screens (mobile phones/TV) it can be a recipe for a disaster for your skin. So apply it even if you are indoors, but you can re-apply as per convenience.
