How water can heal your body

The miraculous quality of water to heal makes it one of the most therapeutic mediums to exercise in. Aqua fitness includes various forms of vigorous exercises like aerobics, strength training, yoga, pilates, and Zumba that are done in swimming pools. Depending on the depth of the water, one can achieve different fitness goals; those willing to burn fat can exercise in shallow water and those seeking deep-muscle conditioning and better neuromuscular coordination can opt to work out in the middle to deep ends of the pool. Aqua aerobics depends on multiple props for different types of training. Aqua bells, noodles, mitts, balls and bar bells are used to increase resistance in the water, thereby stimulating weight loss. This form of fitness is ideal for people suffering from arthritis, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, pregnant women and senior citizens.

Benefits

When submerged in water, the body weighs only ten per cent of the original body mass. This helps to unload the joints of body pressure, bringing the impact down to zero. Any joint issues and arthritic pains are taken care of by immersing the body in the water. Plus, unlike other exercises done on land, aqua fitness does not lead to delayed onset of muscle soreness, in fact it conditions them. Since water has 13 times more resistance than air, the intensity of a water workout is much higher than of a workout done on land. A mere ten minutes of exercise in water is equal to 30 minutes of brisk walking on a treadmill. Furthermore, there is no risk of injury as the hydrostatic pressure of the water cushions your body all around. With almost 600 to 1,200 calories being burnt in one hour, this is one of the most effective weight loss routines. Not only does it helps get rid of flab but also gives a great symmetry to the body. Being a pain-free workout, all the more makes it fun, therapeutic and excellent way to combat depression.

Myths

There are various myths around the workout that make it seem less approachable to fitness enthusiasts. People believe that aqua fitness is limited to swimmers. However, it is accepting of non-swimmers as well. Exercises are done in shallow water and floatation devices used make it safer for non-swimmers. Another issue is of women staying away from swimming pools during their periods. Tampons are a safe hygienic option for sceptical women. One of the biggest misconceptions that people have about aqua fitness is that since the body doesn't sweat under water, there is no effective weight loss. This is not true at all. Burning more than 600 calories in an hour is bound to make one sweat, however it is not noticeable under water. It is important therefore, to keep your body hydrated.

Precautions

Before embarking on any fitness workout, consult your doctor. Always work out under the supervision of a certified aqua fitness instructor. Excessive time spent in the pool causes tanning and sunburns. Remember to apply a good sunscreen 20 minutes before going to the pool. People with skin and urinary infections and those suffering from epilepsy must avoid the pool.
