The Exposed Bra trend from Mean Girls is back, and it's having a moment on the red carpet

For the longest time, women's undergarments have been sexualised, and God forbid if your bra straps are visible, some well-intentioned woman will whisper in your ear to tuck them in. However, a new trend is emerging that defies the need to hide the bra, instead celebrates what was once considered a wardrobe malfunction. 

Before getting into where it all began, let us first understand, what the trend is.

The Exposed Bra trend

The exposed bra trend refers to a fashion movement where women purposefully showcase their bras as a deliberate part of their outfits. It involves intentionally allowing elements of the bra, such as straps, lace details, or even the entire bra itself, to be visible.

This trend challenges traditional notions of concealing undergarments and embraces the idea of incorporating them as a fashion statement. 

Where did it all start? 

Like any other trend, this trend also did not have a specific point of origin; but took off this summer, especially after Cannes 2023. 

By intentionally revealing their bras, influencers and stars challenged the general stereotype that society has regarding women's undergarments, or some are just having fun with their pieces of clothing. 

Now, just for a little reference, if you're into Y2K aesthetics, you must know the cult favourite movie, Mean Girls. Let me give you some context: Remember when Cady (Lindsay Lohan) was trying to transform into Plastic and she reaches a house party, where she dons her best outfit of the entire film?

Sporting a black strapless mini dress with a pink stripe, Cady fully embraces the exposed bra trend of the early 2000s. She pairs it with sheer black tights, hot pink hoop earrings, a ribbon choker, and black boots. The current trend is a similar one.
