When Hailey Bieber launched her beauty company Rhode, it generated quite a buzz. Everyone aspired to achieve her natural, glowing and glazing skin. She claimed that one of the key factors behind it was the latest formula in one of her serums, and the main compound responsible for its success? Peptides, of course. Since then, peptides have become a prominent chemical popping up in every skincare enthusiast's target advertisement.

Rhode is not launched in India, but after Rhode, numerous other skincare brands jumped on the bandwagon, incorporating this 'miraculous compound' in their serums and compound.

But before you also jump and add peptides to your skincare routine, let's understand what exactly are peptides. Dr Sujit Shanshanwal, a dermatologist from Mumbai explains what peptides are.

Peptides for skin, in simple terms, are small chains of amino acids that play a vital role in the health and appearance of our skin.

So, while getting your hands on a peptide product for your skin, you need to remember two things:

  • According to Shazia Zaidi, a dermatologist from Noida, peptides on their own are actually useless. It must be mixed with other agents like retinol or ceramide. This was, however, very different from how the marketing is done in Indian and Western markets.. These serums are marketed as 'Peptides' based serums and nothing else.  So check the label before buying it.
  • Another point to be noted that Dr Shanshanwal explains is that peptides are of different kinds and forms. So while buying you need to keep in mind which peptide is being used, and what concentration is being used, and with the right information, the right product will give you better results.
There is no proper body for governing these brands, so they are not obliged to submit a report with a percentage and stuff. So that is why the reliability of commercial products that is what becomes questionable now

Why peptides are good for our skin?

Your skin needs peptides, as peptides make up certain proteins needed by the skin.

According to Dr Zaidi, collagen is composed of three polypeptide chains. By introducing peptides in your skincare, it can potentially stimulate the skin to produce more collagen. Increased collagen production can result in firmer and more youthful-looking skin.

It's important to note that our body naturally produces collagen. However, as we age, collagen production gradually decreases, leading to the appearance of wrinkles and uneven, dull skin.

Here's a quick guide on peptides for you:

  • Select the appropriate product form that allows for prolonged contacts with your skin, such as a serum or moisturizer. Cleansers, which are rinsed off quickly, may not provide optimal effectiveness.
  • Be mindful when choosing complementary ingredients. Peptides tend to work best when combined with substances like vitamin C, niacinamide, antioxidants, and hyaluronic acids. However, be cautious when using peptides with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), as they can potentially reduce the efficiency of the peptides.
  • Pay attention to the product label. Ideally, peptides should be listed near the top of the ingredient list. They may also be identified as "palmitoyl."

  1. Anti-ageing benefits: Peptides, such as those that stimulate collagen production, can help improve skin elasticity, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and promote a more youthful complexion.
  2. Moisturizing and hydrating: Certain peptides have the ability to improve skin hydration by attracting and retaining moisture, resulting in plumper and more supple skin.
  3. Skin healing and repair: Some peptides have properties that aid in skin healing and repair, making them beneficial for individuals with acne scars, sun damage, or other skin concerns.
  4. Versatility: Peptides can be formulated into various skincare products, allowing for easy integration into different steps of a skincare routine, such as serums, creams, and masks.

Bottom Line: When we asked dermatologists whether or not peptides work as well as 'botox', both of them laughed it off. Hence, it is not good as it is marketed, but if you consult a professional before buying this product, it might work for you.
