When it comes to air travel, baggage check-in and waiting for luggage can be among the most frustrating aspects. However, Delhi and Hyderabad airports have recently introduced a new technology, inspired by Dubai, to address this issue.
What is it?
- Delhi and Hyderabad airports have announced the launch of Self-Baggage Drop (SBD) services.
- At Delhi Airport, the facility is available at Terminal 3, while at Hyderabad Airport, it is located near entry gate number 9.
- This innovative initiative aims to streamline the baggage drop-off process, reduce wait times by 15-20 minutes, and enhance the overall airport experience for passengers.
How does it work?
Hyderabad Airport has installed eight fully automated self-baggage machines, while Delhi Airport features fourteen self-baggage drop machines, including twelve fully automated and two hybrid units.

Who can use it now?
Currently, passengers flying domestically with IndiGo can avail of the self-baggage machines. However, this service will soon be extended to other airlines such as Air India, Vistara, Air France, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, and British Airways.
International travelers will also have access to the service once mandatory approvals are obtained.
Here's how to use it:
- Upon entering the airport, locate a self-check-in kiosk to print your boarding pass.
- At the kiosk, select the baggage option, provide the necessary details, and print the bag tag.
- Proceed to the self-bag drop unit and place your baggage on the conveyor belt. Scan your boarding pass barcode to initiate the process.
- After scanning, you need to declare that your luggage does not contain prohibited items.
- Wait for a few seconds as the unit performs a baggage check, including weight verification.
- If everything meets the requirements, the unit will process the bag, send a confirmation to the airline, and automatically transfer the baggage to the sorting area and onward to the aircraft.
- In case the baggage does not meet the criteria (e.g., exceeds weight limit), the unit will reject it, and an agent will assist you.
The Self-Baggage Drop facility aims to make the passengers self-reliant, while at the same time reduce the time taken for baggage processing significantly and providing them the option to truly enjoy their time at the Airport
