It's probably the first time MTV Europe Music Awards managed to gain the amount of traction it in did in India and the credit goes to Deepika Padukone, alone. As the nation waited for the actress to saunter on to the red carpet in style, little did we know that the dazzling moment would be accompanied by a sigh of disappointment.
Wearing a Monisha Jaising number custom-made for the actress in collaboration with her stylist Shaleena Nathani - who probably knows every inch of Deepika's sensibilities better than the actress herself - the end result didn't look like the bespoke vision one would expect to see on the red carpet.
A glitzy bralette accompanied with an equally glittery bomber jacket and a skirt that swallowed her legs and forced her to pose a la Angelina Jolie on the Oscars red carpet (2012), Deepika seemed to have taken a risk that veered slightly more on the lower end of the sartorial spectrum, still it was very much in a territory it could be salvaged from. However, it's the finishing touches that were the game changers.
With a belt reminiscent of the days of WWE and tassel earrings from Balmain, the look suddenly turned disastrous with the Daily Mail having the gall to call our homegirl a "Bollywood blunder".
Deepika's legions of fans consider the tabloid an enemy ever since the paper failed to recognise the highest paid star of Bollywood and branded her as a mere "female companion" of tennis ace Novak Djokovic, when she was spotted with him early this year; however, this time it seems that it is in fact our beauty who failed to make a mark.
For some reason, the actor hasn't had a great run on international red carpets. While this appearance was hailed as her big international red carpet debut, considering it's just ahead of her Hollywood debut alongside megastar Vin Diesel in xXx: Return of Xander Cage, Deepika has had equally-sorry outings in the past.
Her first international appearance was at the Cannes Film Festival, where she failed to make a mark in her Rohit Bal saree. Yes, the bikini blouse and impeccable waist got her those Kellogs advertisements, but was it a Deepika Padukone look we remember? Not a chance!
Another outing at 2013's Marrakech International Film Festival in a gorgeous Gauri and Nainika number was marred by the absurd earrings that seemed to overpower her earlobes, without any sense of purpose.
It's great to experiment and have fun, and as much as Deepika plays it safe, once in a while she loves to shake things up. Though a departure from her usual style, this Sabyasachi look only seems fit for magazine editorials, yet Deepika managed to wear it with aplomb!
Or what about the time she managed to look like the perfect amalgamation of a polished princess-ballerina in this gorgeous Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla number?
Sheers, peek-a-boo cut-outs, plunging necklines, thigh-high slits and every single element that has contributed towards the stellar run Deepika has had during her outings - irrespective of the scale of the event - it just leaves one wondering, what forces work their magic whenever it is Deepika's turn to shine and represent India on a bigger platform.
