Leave everything, PM Modi, and watch AIB on demonetisation

It’s been almost a month since Narendra Modi’s ambitious demonetisation drive was announced and sure it is still affecting the lives of the common man and woman, more than it has affected those with black money. People have died and bank employees have been stressed out beyond belief. The serpentine ATM queues haven’t gotten any shorter and the only change that is readily available is in the new-day-new-rule fiasco of the demonetisation drive itself.

Amidst all this chaos is the need for some laughter and humour and India’s leading comedy group, All India Bakchod, is finally out with a video on demonetisation. The comedy group is known for its take on a lot of social and political issues and their take, while not the most unique, is certainly always funny. Almost always.

AIB’s demonetisation satire manages to cover almost everything that has been wrong with it and its supporters. The rich managing to get away with exploiting the poor, the “soldier” argument, the “minor convenience” argument and of course, the ever changing rules of this drive.

One of the more poignant aspects of this video is how the impoverished are affected. The video depicts Tanmay Bhat paying his domestic help five months of salary in advance, in old notes, just post the announcement. The privileged upper class/upper middle class has had no qualms about being a hypocrite. They will fight anyone who has opposed the move with all but intelligent rhetoric and yet they will end up being the ones making the least amount of efforts to help support the government’s drive. They will be the ones using obnoxious services like Book My Chotu, while telling people to be ashamed for whining about lines and queues while soldiers die in Siachen.

AIB’s video has been anything but subtle in their open contempt for this move. All jokes and levity apart, this is the kind of thing that needs to be seen by our policymakers for them to realise that all is not as hunky dory as they might perceive from their ivory tower. People are not happy and it’s now starting to show. Watch the full video here:
