For the last 20 years, the masked wrestler Rey Mysterio has graced the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) ring with his lightening fast moves against his opponents. A performer who took the Cruiserweight Championship to the next level and won it thrice, and clinched the WWE Championship twice, Mysterio has had a phenomenal career.
More than three decades after starting his career in 1989, Mysterio looks as fresh and quick as looked back then. However, with age comes injuries and also the fire in the belly to win more takes a back seat. For Rey, since his son Dominik Mysterio made his debut, it looks like he is be happy to take rest now.
Dominik a reason for Rey to quit: Rey Mysterio left the WWE in 2015 after his contract with the company expired, putting an end to his 13-year run in the company. He came back again in 2018 in Royal Rumble, and few months later, the WWE brought in his son Dominik Mysterio in the storyline.
In a way, the company wanted to invest in Dominik for the future knowing that Rey Mysterio won't be in action for long. Rey undestands this and hence tries to push pushing for Dominik.
After that came the entire Mysterio family saga where the entire family, from Rey's wife Angie Gutierrez to his daughter Aalyah Gutierrez were made a part of the storyline. After that saga ended, the focus again shifted on Dominik.
Dominik is not made to work with other wrestlers and he still works with Rey. The the company takes a very bold and risky decision of turning him a heel. Dominik attacks his father's friend Edge, disrespects Rey and from the past few months has been physically attacking his father.
With Rey just not willing to lay his hands on his on his son, the storyline gets more emotional. The fans want Rey to hit back while Dominik craves for a fight.
What next? Most probably, Rey Mysterio will finally accept a match against Dominik at WrestleMania 39. But here, there might be some stipulation put up by Dominik.
It may be that if Rey loses, he might have to leave the company. The reason being, Rey being a veteran wrestler and Dominik a rookie, the company also can't have Rey defeat Dominik clean.
And here comes the role of Rhea Ripley, the Lady Macbeth who is the other half of Dominik these days.Ripley might interfere in the match, causing Rey to lose.
This makes a win-win situation for both Rey and the company as Dominik's career will be saved while Rey will also get a good farewell.
Why this will be the last of Rey at WWE: At 48, Rey is now getting old and nearly all wrestlers of his time, from Edge, Randy Orton to John Cena are towards the end of their in-ring careers and the likes of Triple H, Undertaker, Ric Flair and Shawn Michales have already hung their boots.
The only wrestler from the attutude era who is stiil at the top of his game is Brock Lesnar.
Rey also knows that his ticket to Hall of Fame is waiting for him. So why not finish things when you are still able to fight in the ring.
