5 most expensive Claude Monet paintings sold recently

Legendary French painter Oscar-Claude Monet is considered to be the founder of Impressionism, and his painting have been sold for millions.

His painting, Impression, Sunrise was created from a scene in the port of Le Havre in France and has been credited as the painting that began the art movement of Impressionism. It is also considered to be the most famous Impressionist painting.

But Monet is known for his other artworks too. Here are the five most expensive paintings by Claude Monet sold recently:

1. MEULES FROM HAYSTACKS SERIES

In May 2019, Meules from Monet’s Haystacks series was sold for US $110.7 million at Sotheby’s auction of Impressionist & Modern Art. The final auction amount was achieved in 8 minutes by 6 bidders.

Painted in 1890, the painting became the first Impressionist painting to be sold for more than US $100m. There are 25 paintings in the Haystack series, and only four have been put up for auction this century.

2.  NYMPHEAS EN FLEUR (WATER LILLIES IN BLOOM)

Painted between 1914 and 1917, Monet’s Water Lillies in Bloom was auctioned for US $84.7 million in May 2018. During 1914-1917, Monet created multiple pieces with water lilies being the center of attraction and the collection reflected the avant-garde style used during the World War I.

3.  LE BASSIN AUX NYMPHEAS  (WATER LILY POND)

Le Bassin aux Nympheas was first auctioned in 2004 and sold for US $16.8 million. But in May 2021, when the painting was auctioned again, it fetched US $70.4 million.

Painted between 1917 and 1919, the Le Bassin aux Nympheas is another painting in Monet’s Water Lillies collection.

4. LE GRAND CANAL

Monet’s Le Grand Canal et Santa Maria della Salute was auctioned off for US $56.6 million on May 18, 2022. The Le Grand Canal et Santa Maria della Salute was painted in 1908 and reduces the architectural details of the Santa Maria della Salute to outlines.

5. WATERLOO BRIDGE

Painted in 1904, Monet’s Waterloo Bridge is a painting of the UK Houses of Parliament, Charing Cross and Waterloo bridges with fog. The painting has been owned by the same family for more than 70 years and is expected to be auctioned for US $30 million in June 2022.
