3 Indian players who might be dropped after T20 World Cup

Indian team's World Cup campaign started on a high note after back-to-back wins against Pakistan and Netherlands. However, the team lost a bit of momentum in the third match when the Rohit Sharma-led side lost against South Africa on Sunday (October 30).

In the batting department, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav have been playing extremely well, while in the bowling Arshdeep Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammad Shami are doing fine.

The team looks balanced at the moment barring a few players who have not been able to find much success in Australia. These players might be even dropped from the squad after the World Cup is over.

Here are the 3 three players:

1. Ravichandran Ashwin: Ashwin has been doing okay in T20 World Cup so far but the selectors will rest him for the remaining series because the team already has Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav in the spin department.

Ashwin also proved costly for the team against South Africa where he conceded 43 runs in his spell of 4 overs. Defending a total of 133, Ashwin went for two massive sixes in the 19th over.

  • Also, Ashwin went wicket less against Pakistan in the first match of World Cup.
  • Moreover, he is 36 and there are lot of young players who can replace him. As per BCCI, the selectors were very cautious on which players to rest after the World Cup because being a senior player, the management cannot ask Ashwin to play all formats of the game.
  • Ashwin, anyways, was not even in the scheme of things for T20 World Cup. It was on the insistence of Rohit Sharma that the off-break bowler made a return to the team in the Asia Cup and also  found a place in T20 World Cup squad.
  • In the absence of Washington Sundar, Ashwin was a good option for the team.
  • Ashwin was a temporary solution since Washington has been struggling injuries. But in T20Is, Sundar will be preferred, a BCCI official said, reported Insidesport.

2. Dinesh Karthik: Karthink was included in the team to perform his role as a finisher but he has also failed in the two matches he got the chance to bat.

  • His score against Pakistan was 1 while against South Africa he had a disappointing innings with the bat scoring 6 of 15 balls.
  • Karthik too because of his seniority as well as keeping in mind the ODI World Cup next year might be rested by the BCCI for sometime while Hardik Pandya, Jadeja and Pant can be groomed for the role of the finisher.
  • Karthik has found no place in the Indian squad announced for ODI and T20I series against New Zealand and ODI and Test series against Bangldesh. According to the BCCI, Karthik has not been named in the Indian squad because the management wants to give him some rest.
  • Whether he remains in the team or not, there are at least two more matches of India left in the tourmament. And if the team qualifies for the semi-finals, Karthik will have a crucial role to play with the bat.

3. Axar Patel: Though Axar Patel has found a place in the Test and ODI series against Bangladesh, he might not be kept in the shortest format of the game because Ravindra Jadeja will be back in the side soon.

  • Patel has delivered with the ball but has so far failed to impress with the bat. He wasn't included in the side against South Africa as Deepak Hooda was given a chance.
  • Patel might not find a place in the side if Jadeja comes back from injury. It also remains to be seen how the allrounder performs in the match against Bangladesh on November 2 (Wednesday) if he is part of the playing XI.
