Daniel Caesar, the Canadian singer currently on his Superpowers World Tour (Asia), suddenly cancelled his Seoul concert at the Olympic Hall in Songpa District, southern Seoul, just three hours before it was supposed to start on December 12.
Although fans were promised full refunds, they are furious with the sudden cancellation and a live broadcast of his backstage moments with popular K-Pop girl group, Blackpink's Jennie as his translator.
Why are Blackpink fans angry?
- The Canadian singer and songwriter Daniel Caesar canceled his Seoul concert at the Olympic Hall in Songpa District, southern Seoul just three hours before the concert on December 11, 8 pm KST (Korean Standard Time) or 4:30 PM IST (Indian Standard Time).
- This Seoul concert was Daniel Caesar's first solo performance in Korea.
- Live Nation, the concert production company, cited unforeseen circumstances for the cancellation and apologized to disappointed fans.
- However, after the cancellation, an unexpected turn occurred when Daniel posted a backstage moment with Blackpink's Jennie serving as his translator. Although fans were surprised by her appearance, Daniel is facing backlash for this move.
- The interaction between the two was broadcast live on the same day as the canceled concert. Still, Blackpink fans are angered, viewing it as an attempt to divert attention from the abrupt cancellation by using Jennie's popularity to shift the focus.
- The company also canceled the entire Superpowers Tour (Asia) without specifying reasons. Full refunds for both the canceled Tuesday concert and the preceding Monday performance, which went ahead as planned, will be automatically issued.
However, even before this incident Daniel got nearly cancelled.
Daniel's 2019 controversy
- Ashton Dumar Norwill Simmonds, known professionally as Daniel Caesar, is a Canadian R&B singer-songwriter. He gained recognition with his first EP or mini album "Praise Break" (2014)
- However, Daniel Caesar faced controversy in 2019 when he defended social media star YesJulz during an Instagram Live session, criticising the Black community's response to her racially insensitive tweet.
- He questioned why Black people were being mean to white people and challenged the notion of equality. The backlash led to a decline in album sales, prompting Daniel to apologize days later.
- In a 2023 interview, he acknowledged his wrongdoing, expressing regret and apologising for his previous comments.
Jennie played a vital role behind the scenes, assisting the Canadian singer with translations. The live broadcast also featured Daniel Caesar warmly greeting Jennie in English and sharing details about his day. Fans were pleasantly surprised by Jennie's presence, commending her versatility and enjoying the unexpected collaboration.
However, following the abrupt cancellation of his concert and then broadcasting the video did not work in favor of the singer.
