With the release of the long-awaited sequel to Avatar, The Way of the Water, right around the corner, American director James Cameron blames testosterone for his questionable career choices as a filmmaker in Hollywood.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Titanic director reflected back on decisions he took across the span of his career.Â
He lays the blame on the male sex hormone testosterone, describing himself as a previously âwild, testosterone-poisoned young manâ and labelling the hormone as a âtoxin that you have to slowly work out of your systemâ.
Cameronâs statements have been slammed by what can only be labeled as âtestosterone aficionadosâ (yes, Elon Musk too)Â over the Internet, and have been declared as a âwar on menâ.
The statements allude to the heated arguments the director has had with studio executives in the past concerning his record-breaking and award-winning films, Titanic (1997) and Avatar (2009).
When an unnamed Fox executive allegedly begged Cameron to reduce the massive 162-minute runtime of Avatar, Cameron recounted to The Hollywood Reporter:
Avatar went on to break multiple records with its $77 million domestic opening weekend in the US and $3 billion global box office gross, according to Box Office Mojo.
Hereâs a short compilation of who we consider the most âtestosterone-fuelledâ filmmakers, at home in India and in the West:
According to Cameron, Avatar: The Way of the Water will have to rank in as the third or fourth highest grossing films of all time just to break even, stating that the film was âvery f***ing expensive to makeâ and the âworst business case in movie historyâ.
Verdictâs still out on whether or not the film will follow in the steps of its predecessor now that its creator is walking the path forsaking testosterone - a clear formula for success for the first Avatar.
Avatar: The Way of the Water hits theatres on December 16, 2022.
