Meet The Addams Family, the eerie household in Netflix’s latest series Wednesday

Netflix released the first look at the highly anticipated live-action adaptation to The Addams Family, titled Wednesday. The eight-part horror-comedy series is produced by Tim Burton, who also directs the first two episodes of the series. Watch the new trailer,

The series will be a coming-of-age supernatural mystery comedy focusing on the titular, Wednesday Addams and her years as a high school student at Nevermore Academy where she attempts to master her psychic powers, stop a monstrous killing spree of the town citizens, and solve the supernatural mystery that affected her family 25 years ago. 

Created by the American cartoonist Charles Addams in 1938, The Addams Family originally appeared in a series of 150 unrelated comic panels in The New Yorker for over 50 years.

The family was intended to satirise the ideal, conventional 20th-century American family and its values. The Addams are an opulent family for whom the macabre or disturbing is the norm, while those around them stand terrified. 

In popular culture: Over the years, The Addams Family received a significant number of adaptations including a live-action TV series of the same name in 1964, a franchise of live-action films in the 90s and a whole bunch of animated series since its conception.

The Addams Family has had a profound impact on the American landscape, its influence permeating comics, cinema and television. Time has compared “the relevance and the cultural reach" of the family with those of the Kennedys and the Roosevelts”. And for very obvious reasons, The Addams Family has played an important role in redefining goth subculture and aesthetics.

Although a precise release date has not been announced, Wednesday will stream on Netflix in the fourth quarter of 2022.
