Jams Don't Lie cos Shakira caught Gerard Pique cheating on her with some help from strawberry

Colombian singer Shakira's latest release, Out Of Your League, with Argentinian DJ Bizarrap, is breaking records as the most-watched new Latin song in YouTube's history. It has managed to rack up over 141 million views and counting and has topped Spotify's global chart. But the story behind the song is making more headlines than the song itself.

In Out Of Your League, Shakira is said to be taking clear aim at her ex-boyfriend and Barcelona FC footballer Gerard Pique, his new girlfriend Clara Chia Marti and his mother. It is in its entirety a diss track. But before we go to dissecting the diss track, let's take a look at the ~jam~.

Shakira and Gerard's break up and the jam: The couple called it quits after 12 years of being in a relationship, albeit not married. They also share two children - Milan and Sasha. Reportedly, Shakira caught Gerard cheating on her after coming home to a half-eaten jar of strawberry jam, which he never liked or ate. Shakira deduced that someone came to their house while she was away. The rest is history.

Speaking in an interview about the split, Shakira said that it was difficult and that she had put her career on hold for Gerard when she moved to Barcelona, Spain with him so he could pursue his football career. Now, Shakira is moving to Miami with her two kids, to where her maternal family lives.

Shakira and her decade-long boyfriend (now an ex) Gerard Pique's split came as a shock to their fans. While much of the split was kept under wraps from the public, now, the diss track by Shakira is giving the not-so-sunny side of the story.

So, we looked at the English-translated lyrics of the song and the apparent story behind each of the lines:

I was out of your league, that's why you're

With someone just like you

Shakira doesn't seem to be holding back feelings here as she degrades her ex and his new girlfriend's "league" compared to hers.

You left me with your mom as a neighbor

The press at my door, and debt with the Treasury

You thought you'd hurt me, but you made me stronger

Women no longer cry, women get paid

And Shakira did not just sing a song about Pique's mother, according to reports; she also placed a mannequin dressed as a witch on her Barcelona home balcony facing the house of Pique's mother. There is no crypt in this message.

With regards to the mention of the "debt with the Treasury", Shakira seems to be referring to her troubles with the Spanish government over alleged tax evasion. The singer has been charged with tax fraud for failing to pay 14.5 million euros in income tax and going by this song, the singer clearly blames Pique for it.

As for the line about women getting paid, Shakira is not wrong. She has so far made $2.5 million from YouTube, Amazon Music, Spotify and Apple Music with Out Of Your League. The paycheck is obviously going to go higher.

But the diss track gets better.

I'm worth two 22-year-olds

You traded in a Ferrari for a Twingo

You traded in a Rolex for a Casio

Gerard Pique's new girlfriend Clara Chia is 23 now, and reportedly the duo started seeing each other when she was 22. Shakira is obviously making a point here by saying she's worth more than two Claras and even calling Clara a cheaper car and a watch brand compared to her.

Interestingly, Pique chose to respond to the diss track by driving to work in a Twingo and getting a sponsorship with Casio.

Renault Twingo also had a response:

This is the one about Casio:

While Renault played it cool, Casio doesn't seem to be taking the message well:

Diss tracks for the win: Shakira's revenge song against her ex isn't the only one to make the news this month. Just weeks ago, Miley Cyrus chose to release an alleged diss track against her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth that happened to drop on his birthday.

As for Shakira, she also has last year's Te Felicito directed at Pique.

While much of the attention surrounding the hit songs have been around celebrity gossip and break-up, the songs have managed to do well with the audience given how relatable the feelings are. Comments on the songs read: I feel the same way, I needed to hear this, etc...

It is quite telling that it doesn't matter if it's Shakira, Miley Cyrus or Taylor Swift, or Ed Sheeran, humans feel hurt, and hurt each other, regardless of their geographic location or the money in their bank accounts.
