The American freestyle hiphop dancer and television personality, DJ Stephen 'tWitch' Boss, better known as 'tWitch' on The Ellen Degeneres Show, has died by suicide aged 40.

The star’s wife Allison Holker Boss confirmed his passing in a statement.

"It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to share that my husband Stephen has left us. Stephen lit up every room he stepped into. He valued family, friends and community above all else and leading with love and light was everything to him. He was the backbone of our family, the best husband and father, and an inspiration to his fans."

  • TMZ reported Holker approached law enforcement because Boss had left home without his car, which was “something that was not like him at all”.

LAPD officials reportedly received a call from paramedics shortly after, having found Boss dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a hotel in Los Angeles.

tWitch's TV journey: The dancer and producer got his first big break as a contestant on MTV's The Wade Robson Project, following which he finished second place on the American version of So You Think You Can Dance in 2008.

After competing in So You Think You Can Dance, he taught dancing at South County Classical Ballet with fellow finalist Katee Shean.

  • Boss featured on The Ellen DeGeneres Show as a guest DJ in 2014.
  • In 2020, he became a co-executive producer of Ellen DeGeneres' daytime talk show.

The late star previously co-hosted Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings with Holker. He also appeared in many high-profile films and shows, including Magic Mike XXL, Modern Family and the Step Up franchise.

On December 10, 2013, Boss married Holker and also adopted her daughter. The couple had two kids together soon after.

"To say he left a legacy would be an understatement, and his positive impact will continue to be felt. I am certain there won't be a day that goes by that we won't honour his memory. We ask for privacy during this difficult time for myself and especially for our three children."
