Pretty superstar and drug addict are tags that don’t bond, for a Bollywood image. That’s what Alia Bhatt was probably referring to when she said she had taken the “biggest risk of her career” signing Abhishek Chaubey’s Udta Punjab, an extreme close-up on the drug scenario in that state.
The film is supposed to present varied perspectives of the drug situation in Punjab through sub-plots reprised by four different sets of characters. Alia along with Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Diljit Dosanjh spearhead the cast, and that is also where you spot another reason Alia might find the film risky.

There is the tiny bit about being pitted against Kareena (with whom she has been abundantly compared lately). Plus, fact that Kareena is returning in the same film with ex-flame Shahid (okay, they do not share a single frame, but does that take the fizz away?).
One thing about Alia, though. Call her dumb if you wish, but she shows the right brains when it comes to signing the right projects.
