Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was a reflection of Kashmir's sentiments

Mufti Mohammed Sayeed's death is an irreparable loss not just for Kashmir, but to the entire nation. As Kashmiris mourn today, Sayeed's political legacy will be remembered to be progressive, based entirely on the ethos of democracy.

The past nine months have been difficult for the party as an ailing Sayeed showed little signs of recovery. Despite his failing health, he managed 23 trips to Srinagar during this time. Such was his commitment and love for the state that he died while working, even in his last days.

Sayeed was a firm believer of non-violence. Whenever the troubled Valley battled militancy, he advocated peace and urged people to live in harmony, condemning and shunning all forms of violence. His philosophy was simple - to promote a vibrant democracy that would penetrate the very grassroots, by empowering the political institutions of the state.

Unlike the elaborate Indian political system, Kashmir's is quite simple - just like its people. Sayeed understood this and he fine-tuned his politics as per the needs of the people: becoming inclusive and promoting participation through dialogue.

The PDP's recent alliance with the BJP was much publicised and seen with scepticism. But Sayeed, a man who was above party politics, believed any decision that would empower democracy in J&K, was essential for the state. With his daughter, Mehbooba Mufti, taking over the baton as chief minister, this alliance is only set to flourish.

Mufti Mohammed Sayeed was not just the face of the PDP, but a reflection of the sentiments of everyone in Kashmir. One of the most trusted politicians in the nation and a statesman in the truest sense; he was respected across party lines.

With sheer perseverance and struggle, Sayeed created a vision for Kashmir that has laid down the road map for the future. His legacy is a guiding force for the people of Kashmir.
