The rise of Yogi Adityanath has been marked by two rather noticeable incidents (apart from the crusade against abattoirs and Romeos). One, a steady influx of memes on the priest-turned-chief minister, and second, a number of police complaints against those taking digs at him.
On March 21, the Bangalore Police lodged a criminal case against a woman for putting up "objectionable posts" on her Facebook page, which allegedly showed Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath in "poor light”, after an FIR was filed against the woman upon a complaint from BJP Yuva Morcha members.
On March 23, Rahat Khan from Noida was arrested for allegedly posting "objectionable" images of the CM on social media platforms, after a complaint was filed by the Hindu Yuva Vahini, a far-Right hardline outfit founded by Adityanath himself.
The most notable of these incidents was an FIR registered in Uttar Pradesh's Hazratganj against filmmaker Shirish Kunder for “objectionable tweets” about the UP CM.
The now deleted tweets read, "Hoping a goon will stop rioting once he's allowed to rule is like expecting a rapist to stop raping once he's allowed to rape”, and "Going by the logic of making a goon as CM so that he behaves, Dawood can be CBI director. And Mallya - RBI Governor."
Kunder has since apologised for the tweets, but that does not change the fact that, perhaps, we are being a tad sensitive about the CM’s reputation.
Without indulging in defamation, everyone should be allowed to air opinions, or take digs at public figures. Kunder’s tweet and the subsequent FIR is an example of how even opinion is being stifled through loopholes in the law.
But memes and tweets shall never be contained, and to social media's credit, there are several people both on Twitter and Facebook who have dedicated themselves to making memes about the Yogi.
Hopefully none of them will get arrested. Here are few of the more hilarious ones.
